What should I expect at my first visit?

If you are seeing Dr. Adams or Dr. Mendez for a chiropractic visit, the initial intake will generally take 45 minutes to 1 hour. This includes filling out all the necessary paperwork beforehand, a comprehensive medical and lifestyle history as well as a physical exam.

At Miami Spine and Performance, we take a thorough and holistic approach to assessment of an individual and their presenting complaints. Because the human body is one closed system, often times the source of your presenting complaint may be in another area or system of the body all together.

We also believe that having a detailed, one-on-one first visit provides the opportunity for the physician and patient to build a foundation of trust and rapport that will ultimately lead to the best outcomes in care.

What are Treatments like?

One of the foundational principles of Miami Spine and Performance is that the patients are given 100% of the attention of the treating physician. We know your time is valuable and we appreciate you trusting us with your healthcare.

All of your treatments will either be performed by your treating physician or at home on your home as prescribed. You will not be seen or treated by another practitioner or assistant within the office.

The treatment is always dictated by the findings of the initial assessment and may include chiropractic adjusting, soft tissue therapy, corrective exercises, acupuncture, nutritional counseling and/or a home exercise program. The treatment will always be the one that will give the most effective and lasting impact as well as one that the patient is comfortable with.

Once I start chiropractic treatment, does it go on forever?

No. The first question that we need to answer when a patient comes into our office is to make sure that they are in the right office or if you may need to see another provider to resolve your condition. If you are a candidate for treatment in our office, we will look to develop a plan which consists of office visits, as well as potentially some exercise/stretching recommendations at home and potentially supplementation/nutrition if necessary. At the conclusion of the initial assessment we will give you a clear timeline for your care.

How many visits does it typically take to resolve a condition?

For the majority of conditions that we treat in our office, the patient can expect to see substantial improvement in 3-5 weeks (4-8 visits). Being a patient at Miami Spine and Performance patient will also give you access to the doctor for questions and follow ups during non-office hours via text and/or phone call while you perform stretches, exercises or lifestyle changes that the doctor has recommended to reduce the necessity for lots of office visits.

With the goal of rapid pain relief and low number of visits, how do you maintain a steady patient base?

Because we are able to resolve most conditions in our office sometimes within just a handful of visits, we do rely on world of mouth referrals from our patients so that we can continually help new patients.

If you have a great experience with us, the best compliment is for you to refer a family member or friend to our care.

Do I need a referral?

No. In the state of Florida, a chiropractor is a direct access physician and does not need a referral from another provider to see a provider at Miami Spine and Performance.

Do you only treat spine problems?

At Miami Spine and Performance we treat a wide variety of conditions in addition to the spine including headaches, sciatica, shoulder/hip/knee pain, tendonitis, TMJ dysfunction and many more. See our “conditions” page for a list of conditions we treat.

Are you going to crack me? What I do not want to be cracked?

The chiropractic adjustment is simply one tool that we utilize at Miami Spine and Performance to increase range of motion and reduce pain. We will thoroughly explain the adjustment in detail if we feel that it is a necessity for you care. In the case that you are uncomfortable being adjusted or hearing the “popping” sound we are more than happy to use alternative means to achieve the same outcome. At Miami Spine and Performance we see cases regularly that do not receive any adjustments during treatment and see great results with care.

Do Chiropractors work with medical doctors or other specialists?

Yes, Miami Spine and Performance works with some of the most respected medical doctors, specialists and therapists in the area. We frequently refer patients to medical doctors and accept referrals from medical doctors to ensure the patient is receiving the best and most appropriate care.

Why should I go to you before my primary doctors for muscle and joint pain?

Generally a primary care doctors or family doctor does not have specialized training in dealing with musculoskeletal complaints conservatively and will generally write a prescription to relieve pain or make a referral to a surgery, which may not always be the appropriate invention for care.

At Miami Spine and Performance, we are trained specifically in conservative, non-surgical rehabilitation and orthopedics. This allows us to assess patients and make a proper classification of that patient’s condition to determine the appropriate intervention without taking more extreme measures such as the use of medications and surgery.

Will you X-ray me?

In most cases, we do not require the patient to get any type of imaging (X-ray, CT scan, MRI). We are a movement-based clinic and will use your history, your movements and our physical exam to assess the nature of your condition.

There are, however, specific instances in which imaging is require such as traumatic injury, specific symptoms or medical history that may require advanced imaging for further investigation.
